Tech to the Rescue: AI and Drones Protecting Swimmers from Sharks
On summer mornings, Padaro Beach in California transforms into a bustling hub where local children gather to learn surfing in the gentle waves. This serene beach has also become a favored spot for juvenile great white sharks. Public fear and panic led to researches in the area scrambling to try and find a way to find out what was going on as well as warning the general public. This led to the University of California Santa Barbara’s Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory (BOSL) initiating SharkEye, an AI program that employs drones to monitor the waters, ensuring the safety of beachgoers.
